Stylish, fabulous: create a minimalist home

The minimalist home is the stylish home. For years now, Australian homeowners have been enlisting this style for their homes, clearing the clutter, reducing the decorations and removing the furniture to create cleaner, simpler spaces.

After all, minimalist homes are far less stressful to maintain than one that is full of clutter and goods that pick up dirt and dust like it’s literally no one’s business. So, whether it’s reducing the amount of household items you have, or introducing simpler-yet-stylish decorations like frameless frames, here are a few easy ways to make your home more minimalist:

  1. Take a look at the furniture

Furniture is the household item that can either make or break a feeling of minimalism. Why? Because if you have too much of it, it makes the space look clunky and frenetic. If you have just the right amount, and an amount that is suitable for you and your family’s lifestyle needs then this will be perfect for creating an open, more calming space.

So, take a look at your furniture – what do you see? Do you see an elegant sofa that accommodates all occupants and is perfect for your needs? Or, do you see two big old sofas, an unnecessary chair and a worn out bean bag strewn across the floor? You know which you would prefer for that all-important feeling of calm and relaxation.

  1. Focus one one room before moving onto the next

Decluttering and minimalising a whole home can almost defeat the purpose of minimalising it in the first place: to reduce stress! Yes, trying to clean and declutter a whole home in the one sitting can be a real nightmare, especially if your home was previously full of all kinds of junk you realised you simply don’t need.

So, why not start with one central room? The living room is a great place to begin, as it should always be a room of calm and composure – one of the main points of undertaking a home minimalism in the first place! Once you are happy with this room’s style you can then move onto another, working towards creating your calm and tranquil dream home!

  1. Do you need it?

Is everything you have in your space essential? Or, are there certain things you see that you own but can easily do without? We often allow our homes to get bogged down with goods that are simply not essential, and this is something we can get rid of in the hope of creating a clear, minimalist-style home.

So, take a look at your goods: do you need all of them? Is there an old, IKEA-bought painting that has no sentimental value and is lacking true household importance? If so, why not try and move it on?

  1. Minimalism the decorations

Following on from the mass-produced painting, why not consider minimalising your decoration situation, too? After all, decorations are fantastic but only when they’re tasteful, with elegantly-designed decorations like frameless frames being a go-to for the beautiful, calm and peaceful minimalist home.

  1. Keep the surfaces clear

Declutter and maintain the declutter – this is the ultimate way to maintain a minimalist home. Clutter is the tranquil space’s worst enemy, and can easily be done without, so if your home has fallen victim to a well of surface clutter over the past months or years then start by getting rid of it before creating steps to avoid it all together!
